Copenhagen Jazz Festival opens today, 3 July, and runs until 12 July, transforming Denmark’s capital into one of Europe’s largest live music destinations.
Now in its 47th edition, the festival brings together more than 1,000 concerts across 100 venues, ranging from historic jazz clubs and concert halls to cafés, parks and public squares. Rather than taking place in a single location, the festival spreads throughout the city, inviting visitors to experience jazz as part of Copenhagen’s everyday urban life.
A Festival Woven Into the City
Unlike many music festivals built around one venue, Copenhagen Jazz Festival is designed as a city-wide experience. Performances take place throughout the capital, allowing visitors to discover neighbourhoods while moving between concerts.
The programme combines internationally recognised artists with emerging Danish musicians, reflecting Copenhagen’s long-standing reputation as one of Europe’s most influential jazz cities. Since its founding in 1979, the festival has grown into one of the continent’s largest annual jazz events while remaining closely connected to the city’s cultural identity.
More Than Evening Concerts
This year’s opening day illustrates the festival’s variety. Highlights include the official opening concert, free public performances, cross-genre collaborations and evening headline shows spread across venues including DR Koncerthuset, HUSET, Den Sorte Diamant and Jazzhus Montmartre.
Many concerts are free to attend, while others require advance booking. With events running from afternoon into late evening, visitors can easily build their own itinerary based on neighbourhood, venue or artist.
A Different Way to Experience a Festival
What makes Copenhagen Jazz Festival distinctive is that the city itself becomes part of the programme. Music spills into public spaces, local cafés, canalside venues and cultural institutions, creating an atmosphere where live performance feels embedded in daily life rather than separated from it.
For visitors, the experience is less about attending one headline event and more about exploring Copenhagen through music. That approach has helped establish the festival as one of Europe’s defining urban music festivals, attracting both dedicated jazz audiences and travellers looking to experience the city from a different perspective.
Whether you are planning a weekend in Copenhagen or already visiting the city, the festival offers an opportunity to experience its neighbourhoods one performance at a time. With hundreds of concerts taking place over the next ten days, it is worth exploring the programme and creating your own route through the city.
