A legendary Danube boulder called the Rock of Starvation has fully resurfaced for the first time in decades. It’s not a coincidence. Across France, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, this summer’s drought is exposing how many staple crops assume a climate Europe no longer reliably has.

France’s Corn Crisis Reaches EU Scale

France’s maize harvest may fall by roughly 35% this year, according to the agriculture ministry. That’s down to about 9 million tonnes, from 13.8 million in 2025. Some analysts see it dropping below 8 million tonnes, a level unseen since 1976 itself. That matters well beyond France, since it remains the EU’s largest grain producer by far. The European Commission has already cut its 2026/27 EU maize forecast to 51.9 million tonnes, the lowest since 2007. Some analysts now expect output below 50 million tonnes, for the first time since the 1990s. “Agronomically speaking, the maize situation in the EU is very bad,” Expana analyst Gabriel Antonio said. The shortfall, he warned, will push EU imports sharply higher.

Different Crops, Different Vulnerabilities

Britain’s 2026 wheat yield sits at roughly 6.8 tonnes per hectare, below the ten-year average. AHDB data suggests it ranks among the weakest harvests on record. Spring barley and oats have also underperformed. Winter barley and oilseed rape, though, held up comparatively well this year. That split matters here. Heat doesn’t damage every crop equally. Different growing seasons and heat tolerances mean climate change makes agricultural risk harder to predict, not simply worse across the board.

The Netherlands illustrates a different kind of vulnerability entirely. Dutch potato farmers, central to Europe’s frozen chip supply chains, now face serious irrigation restrictions. Drought doesn’t just shrink a harvest. It threatens to reshape entire food-processing supply chains built around specific crops. Czechia’s hop growers face a related squeeze. Heat and water shortages threaten yields significantly, a real concern for beer production continent-wide. The Danube Tells Its Own Warning Story

Hungary offers the starkest illustration yet. Record-low Danube levels have fully exposed Budapest’s “Rock of Starvation,” a boulder that has surfaced during droughts since 1616. It historically warned that mills would stop turning and crops would fail. Farmer István Somogyi, working land near Pócsmegyer, put it plainly: “I’ve lost nearly 50% of my harvest this year and it could go up to 70%. Since I started farming this land after the end of communist rule, I’ve never seen a catastrophe like this.” Hungary’s prime minister expects this year’s economic damage to exceed the severe 2022 drought entirely. Beyond farmland, the same low river forced Hungary to shut down all but one Danube-cooled nuclear reactor, the first such shutdown in 44 years. Crop failure and energy disruption are now unfolding along the exact same riverbank.

This Year’s Drought Threatens Next Year’s Harvest Too

The consequences extend past this year’s yields. Soil moisture across much of Europe has dropped sharply, threatening the winter crops farmers plant each autumn. Analysts warn dry, hardened soil could disrupt this autumn’s planting entirely, carrying consequences straight into the 2027 harvest. That reframes the entire story. This isn’t simply a bad growing season passing through. It’s the first sign of a multi-year agricultural disruption, each dry year compounding into the next.

What This Means for How Europe Eats

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has already revised its 2026 forecasts downward across the board. Winter crop yields fell 1-4%; grain maize and sunflower fell 6-7%. Europe’s food system was built across a century of stable rainfall and predictable seasons. It’s now running into a climate it wasn’t designed for. The question is no longer whether one crop fails in one country. It’s whether an entire agricultural model, built for a cooler continent, can adapt fast enough to keep up.
