Europe’s AI investment cycle accelerated again today. UK‑based Nscale closed a record‑breaking $2bn Series C round, lifting its valuation to $14.6bn and adding Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg to its board. The raise caps a week of unusually large European AI and deep‑tech financings. These include Yann LeCun’s €1bn seed round at AMI Labs and PLD Space’s €180m injection. Together, they signal that Europe’s capital markets are finally shifting into “infrastructure and foundational tech” mode.

Nscale Raises $2bn, Adds Sandberg and Clegg to Board

UK AI datacentre operator Nscale has secured $2 billion in Series C funding, valuing the company at $14.6 billion.

The round, backed by Nvidia and several global institutional investors, is one of the largest private AI infrastructure financings ever completed in Europe.

The company is building high‑density AI compute campuses across the UK and continental Europe, positioning itself as a sovereign‑aligned alternative to US hyperscalers.

In a move that underscores the political and regulatory weight of AI infrastructure, Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg have joined Nscale’s board.

Their arrival gives Nscale a rare mix of Silicon Valley governance experience and European policy fluency. This combination is a strategic asset as the UK and EU tighten AI‑related regulatory frameworks.

Europe’s AI Funding Wave: AMI Labs Secures €1bn Seed Round

In a separate development, Yann LeCun’s AMI Labs has raised more than €1 billion in what the Financial Times describes as Europe’s largest seed round on record.

The raise highlights a shift in European capital allocation. Investors are now backing foundational model labs, not just applied‑AI startups. In addition, Nscale’s infrastructure push shows how Europe is beginning to assemble a vertically integrated AI ecosystem. The pieces now include compute, models and applications.

Deep‑Tech Momentum: PLD Space Raises €180m

Beyond AI, Europe’s deep‑tech sector also saw a major financing today. Spanish launch company PLD Space raised €180 million, with the European Investment Fund making its largest defence‑related investment to date.

The round reflects a broader trend: European institutions are increasingly willing to back dual‑use and strategic technologies, from space launchers to AI compute infrastructure.

Why This Matters: Europe’s Capital Markets Are Finally Scaling

Today’s announcements point to a structural shift in Europe’s tech investment landscape:

  • AI infrastructure is becoming investable at scale Nscale’s raise shows that sovereign compute is now a mainstream asset class.
  • Foundational AI research is attracting mega‑rounds AMI Labs’ €1bn seed round would have been unthinkable in Europe two years ago.
  • Deep‑tech and defence are entering a new funding cycle PLD Space’s €180m raise signals institutional appetite for strategic technologies.
  • Europe is building a multi‑layered AI stack Compute (Nscale) → Models (AMI Labs) → Applications (broader ecosystem).

Europe’s AI and deep‑tech sectors are entering a capital‑intensive phase, and today’s funding wave may mark the beginning of a new competitive cycle.
