Roughly 60 to 70% of EU soils are currently classed as unhealthy. Brussels is no longer treating that as a farming statistic. New research is reframing soil as a living system tied to food, water, climate, and human health all at once.
The Number Behind the Shift
The European Commission’s own soil degradation dashboard puts the figure plainly. 60 to 70% of EU soils are unhealthy, costing the bloc over €50 billion annually. Some estimates run as high as €140 billion once every degradation process is counted. Globally, soil contamination is linked to somewhere between 200,000 and 800,000 deaths per year. Air pollution and water safety dominate public health conversations. Soil rarely gets the same attention, despite sitting beneath nearly everything people eat every day. We worry about polluted air and unsafe water. Soil has largely escaped that same scrutiny.
Brussels Is Building a Framework for “Healthy Soils by 2050”
On 24 July 2026, the EU Joint Research Centre published “Changes in soil health in the EU.” It assesses governance, monitoring, and degradation indicators across the bloc. It marks a shift from fragmented national soil policies toward integrated management. The EU’s Soil Monitoring Law has been in force since December 2025, backing this up with binding requirements. The underlying goal, healthy soils by 2050, isn’t framed as an agricultural target alone. The Commission positions soil as foundational to food, water regulation, biodiversity, climate resilience, and human health together.
Europe Is Mapping What Lives Underground
The most striking development sits in what the JRC is actually measuring. A 2026 dataset examined soil microbiomes across 484 European locations. It tracked bacteria, fungi, soil respiration, enzyme activity, and soil aggregation. Separately, the JRC has published detailed maps of soil bacteria and fungi at European scale. They’re built from DNA data collected across more than 800 sites under the LUCAS 2018 survey. These aren’t small side projects. They represent a genuine attempt to catalogue an ecosystem most people never think about. Europe is beginning to map the invisible life sitting directly beneath its feet.
The Soil-to-Health Link Isn’t Simple, But It Isn’t Fiction Either
It’s worth being precise here. Scientists haven’t established a direct, one-to-one link between soil microbiomes and human health outcomes. What’s emerging instead is a longer chain: soil, plants, food, animals, and eventually humans. The EU’s Horizon Europe project TRIBIOME studies exactly this, examining how these microbiomes interact and influence one another. The connection between soil and human health isn’t yet a simple equation. But researchers are increasingly mapping the chain that links them.
Some pathways are already far more direct, though. Contaminated soil can pass pollutants straight into food crops, creating a clear line to human exposure. Degraded soil also loses its capacity to absorb and filter water. That feeds directly into flooding and drought risk elsewhere. Soil health, in this light, isn’t purely an agricultural issue anymore. It’s a food, water, climate, and public health issue, bundled into one.
From Soil Protection to Soil Literacy
A separate JRC study, published just days earlier on 20 July 2026, tracked long-term soil trends across the EU. Some indicators show genuine improvement. Others are worsening: loss of soil organic carbon, phosphorus excess, and soil sealing from urban expansion. Left unaddressed, the Commission warns, climate change and urbanisation could compound these problems further.
Brussels is responding with more than regulation, though. In April 2026, the Commission published “Reconnecting Our Health, Food, and Future to the Living Soil.” It promotes citizen soil monitoring, pushing the public to see soil as a living ecosystem, not simply ground underfoot. That’s a genuine cultural shift, not just a policy one. Soil used to be something beneath us, largely invisible and rarely discussed. It’s increasingly treated as a living system Europe depends on, worth understanding the way people already understand air and water quality.
